WHAT DOES `BRAWTA` MEAN?

Brawta is a Jamaican word that means ‘extra’. It is usually used during a transaction between two parties. For example, “I’ve just spent $500 at your store, can you give me some brawta”? It is the Jamaican equivalent of “a baker’s dozen”.

The Brawta Project wants to provide the extra support to bridge the gap between where our children are presently and where they want to be in the future.

HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE BRAWTA?

It is pronounced “Braa-ta”.

WHAT IS THE BRAWTA PROJECT?

The Brawta Project (TBP) is a Canadian federally incorporated non-profit organization that creates and supports educational-based projects focused on children's educational development. The Brawta Project's vision is to impact the lives of children and transform their communities in the process.

TBP is presently located in Canada but has both a domestic and an international focus. The organization operates from the “self-help” model of community development, which states that communities are equipped with the know-how to address their own self-identified needs, and only lacks the right resources to address them. TBP does not see communities as problems for it to “solve”, but as co-builders we work with those on the front-lines while providing the right tools, resources, and supports they need to implement their own solutions. We walk alongside communities through the process of planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating their community-based initiatives.
