“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” - Nelson Mandela
Our Executive Director and his family have created and funded this scholarship to honour the memory of his great-great-grandparents who were strong pillars of the community in St. Mary in Jamaica. Alfred Johnson Sr. was a farmer as well as an Elder in the Carron Hall Presbyterian Church; Florence Johnson was a seamstress.
The Johnsons were a part of a musical family where everyone either played an instrument or sang. Music connected the family together and this was passed on to the generations that proceeded them.
This scholarship will cover the full high school tuition fees for one year to students in Jamaica who are interested in studying Music, Agricultural Science or Fashion Design at the post-secondary/tertiary level. Four students will be supported; two of the scholarships will go to students specifically at Carron Hall High School in St. Mary, Jamaica.
Based on students’ academic performance, the scholarships will be renewed every year until completion of high school.
The Brawta Project believes strongly in community development and as a result, there is an expectation that scholarship recipients will sign a “Community Agreement” to give back to their community based on the support they have received. Students are being given assistance, so the expectation is for them to reciprocate the gesture in the future.
